Prominent Futurist Shares His Perspective on Humanity’s Opportunity with Artificial Intelligence

The rise of artificial intelligence has disrupted nearly every sector of the economy. While some are eager about the possibilities in efficiency and production, many people remain anxious about how these emerging technologies will fit into modern society. Zack Kass, an American AI executive, strategist, keynote speaker, author, and futurist, is more optimistic and encouraged by what humans can achieve if they harness the power of AI.

Kass is the bestselling author of “The Next RenAIssance: AI and the Expansion of Human Potential” (2026). He is known for his optimistic, actionable perspective on AI’s potential to expand human capabilities.

He was recently invited as the keynote speaker at Westmont’s LEAD Where You Stand conference, held June 4-5 at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. The event’s theme, “Leadership, Human Flourishing and Artificial Intelligence,” brought together international thought leaders, tech executives, and organizational mavens to navigate this rapid shift in technology. Kass spoke to an audience of about 300 people, earning several applause breaks and a standing ovation at the end.

A native of Santa Barbara, California, he graduated with a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has over 16 years of experience in AI, holding leadership roles at companies like CrowdFlower, Figure Eight, and LILT. Kass became prominent as Head of Go-to-Market at OpenAI (2021–2023), where he built the sales, solutions, partnerships, and customer success teams that helped commercialize ChatGPT and translate cutting-edge research into business applications.

While some believe the architects of this powerful technology are all-knowing, Kass offered a humble perspective on AI’s rapid evolution.

“We went from building machines that could barely measure sentiment in a tweet to building machines that could conduct multi-step, multi-environment, novel scientific research in six years,” he said. “If you’re impressed, guess what? So are the researchers.”

“Even the researchers are like, yeah, God’s good,” Kass said. “That’s how much humility it requires to stare at this and not assume there is some guiding light.”

Kass also noted pitfalls modern humans are succumbing to, including the effects of screen time on brain development and mobile-device addiction, which have contributed to depression, anxiety, and isolation among Gen Z.

He rejected the largely dystopian views of this technology and said everyone has their own way of implementing AI ethically and effectively, at work and in everyday life.

“I cannot emotionally convince people of the fact that the world is getting better all the time,” Kass said, attributing the widespread cultural pessimism to a media landscape that prioritizes bad news over monumental human progress. “The reason for this simply is that you are overexposed to negative information and you are underexposed to positive information.”

Today, through ZKAI Advisory, he advises Fortune 1000 companies, governments, and leaders on AI strategy and transformation. He serves as Executive-in-Residence at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce, collaborates with institutions like Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and is the AI for Conservation Fellow at Conservation International.

“We’re moving toward a world where the best among us will be measured by our curiosity, empathy, wisdom, courage, humility, and our morality,” he said.

Kass closed his presentation by urging the audience to anchor themselves in their core mission, recognize their intrinsic human value, and reframe their relationship with AI as a collaborative tool for building a more nourishing future.
