Artificial Intelligence Maven Set to Provide Insight into the Future of Workplace Culture, Home Life & Education
Every semester, Illinois State University hosts its Presidential Speaker Series, inviting one guest speaker to engage with the current student body from various fields, fostering intellectual conversations and providing perspective on emerging opportunities and needs facing graduates as they enter the workforce.
This fall, they have invited Kevin Surace, American technology entrepreneur and innovator with 94 patents, known as the “Father of the Virtual Assistant” for his pioneering work on voice interfaces that influenced Siri and Alexa.
The event takes place on November 4 at 7 p.m. at the Brown Ballroom in the Bone Student Center. The keynote is billed as “Win with AI Today: Practical Tips for Work, School, and Home.”

A Rochester Institute of Technology graduate, he co-founded Air Communications, creating the first cellular data smartphone, and served as EVP at General Magic, contributing to early AI assistants. As CEO of Serious Energy (2006–2015), he drove the development of energy-efficient products, including QuietRock drywall, which was used in over 70,000 projects. Currently CTO at Appvance.ai, he leads a generative AI platform for software testing. A prominent speaker on AI and sustainability, Surace has keynoted TED, Inc. 5000, and Congress. He is recognized as Inc.’s 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year and CNBC’s Innovator of the Decade.
