Newly Minted Independent Voice Set to Keynote January Event Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Every year, Illinois State University honors the legacy and impactful contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through its annual speakers series, inviting a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and expertise to address the current student body.
For this year’s presentation, they have invited former White House Press Secretary and Special Advisor to President Biden, Karine Jean-Pierre, who will be the featured speaker for the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Dinner.
This year’s event will take place on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Brown Ballroom in the Bone Student Center on the Normal, Illinois, campus.
The French-American political strategist and author was born in Martinique and raised in Queens, New York, and graduated from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She began in New York City politics, working on John Edwards’ 2004 campaign, then joined Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and White House political affairs team. Later roles included serving as MoveOn.org’s chief public affairs officer and as an MSNBC political analyst. In 2020, she served as Kamala Harris’ chief of staff during Biden’s campaign.

On May 13, 2022, she became White House Press Secretary, the first Black, openly gay, and immigrant woman in the role. Her tenure was marked by frequent clashes with reporters over access and transparency. After leaving office in January 2025, Jean-Pierre publicly left the Democratic Party, citing disillusionment with partisan loyalty. She authored “Moving Forward: A Story of Hope, Hard Work, and the Promise of America” (2019) and her most recent memoir, “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines” (2025).
This event is presented by Illinois State University’s Office of the President, University Housing Services, Event Management, Dining and Hospitality, Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Association of Residence Halls, the Association of Black Employees, and the Black Student Union.
