Animal Scientist Temple Grandin Keynotes Horse Farms Forever Summit

Pioneering Autism Advocate Highlights How Those on the Spectrum’s Perspective Provides an Invaluable Asset

Horse Farmers Forever is an impactful nonprofit founded in 2018, inspiring the conservation of horse farms through education, political advocacy, and awareness to preserve natural pastureland that serves horses and their habitats. In Marion County, Florida, horse-raising is a cornerstone of the community, and the organization ensures the protection of the soil and water on which the local economy depends.

The annual Horse Farmers Forever Conservation Summit, held at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Auditorium last month, featured keynote speaker Dr. Temple Grandin, a pioneering voice in animal science and autism advocacy.

Grandin is a renowned American animal scientist, autism advocate, and one of the most influential autistic individuals alive. Diagnosed with autism as a toddler when it was widely misunderstood, she was nonverbal until age four but, thanks to intensive therapy and her mother’s advocacy, excelled academically. A professor of animal science at Colorado State University, Grandin revolutionized livestock handling with humane, curved-chute systems that reduce animal stress. Nearly half of North America’s cattle now pass through facilities she designed. Her keynote at the event was titled “How Horses Think”.

“She’s inspired the way that we think about empathy and empowerment,” said Amy Mangan, Advent Health Ocala Foundation executive director, who introduced Grandin. “In her discussions, she brings to life what she refers to as open-door possibilities. And this idea is found embracing opportunities that surround us. Those moments we know we can take meaningful action for change, not only in our lives, but in the lives of others.”

The keynote emphasized the innate power those on the spectrum have within themselves to see challenges differently and how they are an asset to a variety of industries.

“I had nine stalls to clean every day, and I had to run a horse barn,” said Grandin. “I learned how to work, and a lot of autistic kids aren’t doing that. Also, the work that I’ve done on cattle equipment. I’ve worked with people who are definitely on the autism spectrum, mechanical geniuses, they can build anything.”

Through bestselling books like “Thinking in Pictures” (1995) and “Emergence: Labeled Autistic” (1986), TED talks, and the 2010 HBO biopic "Temple Grandin" (2010) starring Claire Danes, she became a leading voice for neurodiversity, presenting autism as a different way of thinking rather than a deficit. Grandin continues speaking worldwide on autism, animal welfare, and embracing neurological differences.
