Leading Activist Set to Inspire the Next Wave of Community Leaders on Capitol Hill

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, aimed at enhancing understanding of Islam, protecting civil rights, promoting justice, and empowering American Muslims. They have announced Linda Sarsour, Palestinian-American Muslim political activist, author, and community organizer, as the keynote speaker for its 11th Annual D.C. Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium on Capitol Hill, taking place August 6, 2026.

The eldest of seven children of Palestinian immigrants, she rose to prominence advocating against police surveillance of Muslim communities post-9/11. She served as Executive Director of the Arab American Association of New York and co-founded MPOWER Change, a Muslim online organizing platform.

This year’s event, open to students aged 13 to 19, with a program theme of “Understanding the Assignment: Faith, Freedom & Justice,” will seek to empower young Muslims who may have experienced Islamophobia and help them navigate potential challenges as they exercise their faith alongside a normal teenage upbringing inside the United States.

Sarsour gained national attention as a co-chair of the 2017 Women’s March. She has been involved in Black Lives Matter solidarity efforts, protests against police brutality, immigration policy, and opposition to the Trump travel ban. She also authored the 2020 memoir “We Are Not Here to Be Bystanders”. Her keynote will encourage the young minds to lead with faith, courage, and purpose.

Event attendees can expect a full day of leadership development, advocacy training, and interfacing with congressional staffers, as well as a tour of the U.S. Capitol. The hope is to invigorate the next wave of civic leaders who are eager, inspired, and ready to tackle new paradigms on the horizon.
