Walter Kimbrough Biography

A native of Atlanta Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough graduated as salutatorian and understudy body president from his high school in 1985 and went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in advanced education from Georgia State University. He has had a rewarding career in student affairs while working at Emory University. Georgia State University, Old Dominion University, and finally Albany State University in 2000, where he became Vice President for Student Affairs at the age of 32. He was chosen the eleventh leader of Philander Smith College in October 2004, at the age of 37. In 2012, he became the sixth president of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Kimbrough has been recognized for his research and writings on HBCUs and African American male students. Kimbrough has also been recognized for his innovative use of social media to communicate with students in pieces published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, CASE Currents, and Arkansas Life. The Zeta Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded at the University of Georgia in 1986. Kimbrough earned the Southern Region Alpha Phi Alpha College Brother of the Year and served as the Southern Region Assistant Vice President. Dr. Kimbrough has gained national acclaim as a society and sorority expert, with a particular expertise in Black Latin and Asian meetings. He is the author of Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs, and Difficulties of Black Fraternities and Sororities.
